It's Here! The 2010 Horizon Report

Six "Key Emerging Technologies" for Higher Education Identified in 2010 Horizon Report

2010_cover_200w.jpgOn January 19, 2010, the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) released the 2010 Horizon Report at the ELI Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas. The annual Horizon Report describes the continuing work of the NMC’s Horizon Project, a long-term research project that identifies and describes emerging technologies likely to have considerable impact on teaching, learning, and creative inquiry within higher education.

Director UM3D Lab

Organization

University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

The Digital Media Commons at the University of Michigan is seeking a new Director of the UM3D Lab. The position is available due to the retirement of the current director. The UM3D Lab is an open, incubator lab that serves faculty and staff from all disciplines across the university. For almost 10 years it has played a significant role in the development and application of emerging virtual reality tools, computing-intensive visualization and display technology, as well as motion capture and 3D printing/rapid prototyping systems. The 7,000 square foot lab is staffed by 4 FTE technical research staff and has generous base-funding. The position is for a senior staff person, preferably with a PhD in a related area.

University of Michigan 3D Lab Adds Stereo 3D Viewer to Second Life

The University of Michigan 3D Lab has brought Second Life one step closer to real life by developing stereoscopic support for the Second Life viewer. This recent addition allows visitors wearing special glasses to see the objects of Second Life pop out of the screen similar to watching a 3D movie.

Using the recently released source code by Linden Labs, Gabriel Cirio and Eric Maslowski have developed a stereoscopic version of the Second Life viewer that works with a large-screen stereo projection system. This low-cost system uses passive stereo based on polarizing filters and was built from off-the-shelf components (based on the platform used by the GeoWall).

The University of Michigan 3D Lab is continuing development of their Second Life viewer, as well as other projects related to Second Life and Virtual Reality.

Virtual Reality and Visual Perception

Virtual Reality and Visual Perception
This "visualized research paper" addresses how visual perception is used (and abused) in practical virtual reality.

Digital Morphology Library

The Digital Morphology library at the University of Texas at Austin is a dynamic archive of information on digital morphology and high-resolution X-ray computed tomography of biological specimens.

Digital Morphology, part of the National Science Foundation Digital Libraries Initiative, develops and serves unique 2D and 3D visualizations of the internal and external structure of living and extinct vertebrates, and a growing number of invertebrates. This unique online resource contains nearly a terabyte of imagery of natural history specimens that are important to education and central to ongoing cutting-edge research efforts.
